EMW and Champagne Philipponnat Signed an Exclusive Import and Distribution Agreement for Mainland of China

Date : 2024.08.02

Shanghai, 2 August 2024 – East Meets West Fine Wines (EMW) and Champagne Philipponnat, a historic champagne house located in the heart of the Champagne wine-growing area, signed an exclusive import and distribution agreement for Mainland of China. For over five hundred years, Champagne Philipponnat has been a prestigious family-owned estate passing on the house spirit. EMW is thrilled to partner with Champagne Philipponnat to deliver this centuries-old family tradition and elegance to China.

Family Heritage with Legacy

As a French champagne house with deep and historic family roots, Champagne Philipponnat has left its mark on the soil of the Champagne region.

Apvril Philipponnat was mentioned as far back as 1522 as the owner of vines at a locality called Le Léon, with the family having a long and deep-rooted history in Aÿ (Grand Cru) and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ (Premier Cru), located at the heart of the Champagne wine-growing area. In the 16th century, the Philipponnat family were well-known as winegrowers, merchants, and suppliers to Louis XIV's court, as well as officials and Royal Mayors of Aÿ. The House was officially established in 1910.

With its geographical roots as well as its human touch, the House embodies the family motto, La Champagne au Coeur (Champagne in our hearts), which has driven it for sixteen generations.

Clos des Goisses: A superlative clos in Champagne

Established in the heart of the Champagne wine-growing area, Philipponnat's magnificent historic 18th-century cellars used to be part of the Chateau de Mareuil.

Meanwhile, it possesses a unique heritage, owning an exceptional walled vineyard unparalleled in the Champagne wine-growing area for nearly a century: Clos des Goisses. The name of this 5.5-hectare hillside was inspired by its 45° gradient: in the local dialect, "Goisses" means a very steep slope. Clos des Goisses is also the region's warmest terroir; on the pure chalk soil and facing due south, it receives no shade from sunrise to sunset.

As the first clos and the first "single vineyard" wine to be crafted separately in Champagne, each year, its fourteen plots are carefully sorted as they are picked.

Expertise and Precision

At Philipponnat, techniques break away from habitual practices and aim a constant pursuit of excellence; the production is quality-focused and in small quantities, wines are highly recognizable, and character is vinous and unique.

The estate's expertise is particularly apparent in its use of the solera process. This technique is a very longstanding house tradition; it consists of keeping reserve wines in oak barrels and including them in non-vintage blends (in a proportion of one-quarter to one-third) and using this blend as reserve wines for the following blend. This progressive dilution allows every bottle to retain a trace of previous years' wines blended since the very beginning. Successive Cellar Masters have attached great importance to handing down this expertise.

Philipponnat was also the first Champagne House to indicate the main year used in its non-vintage blends, the dosage and the date of disgorgement on back labels informing consumers and wine experts of the characteristics of each cuvée.
